Our Mission

Providing communities with sustainable footwear to eradicate jigger infection.

The Project

Sole Support was conceptualised in March 2015 with the aim to tackle three main issues in Kenya: jigger infection, lack of affordable footwear, and accumulating stock piles of waste tyres. The project works to provide school children with affordable footwear that protects the foot from picking up the Jigger parasite and offers healthcare advice to help mitigate any subsequent damage to the foot.

Around 1.1 million tyres in Kenya (equating to 34 000 tons) are being burnt haphazardly, dumped, destroyed or re-used by methods that pollute air, soils and ground water.

Our solution utilises tyres that would otherwise have been unlawfully disposed of to create the sole of covered shoes. Sole Support harnesses the power of entrepreneurial action by training individuals within East African communities, equipping them with business and health protection skills so that they can become empowered to produce, market and sell the Sole Support shoes at affordable prices.

This enables those on the lowest incomes access to footwear and medical treatment to prevent further infection and tackle the jigger epidemic on an international scale.

Enactus is a worldwide, non-profit organisation that aims to improve livelihoods globally by mobilising university students and business leaders to use the power of entrepreneurship to provide a social good. The scheme encourages student leaders to create and implement projects that empower and benefit communities socially, economically and environmentally.

Enactus currently operates in 36 countries and 1 710+ universities with 69 000+ students. An annual series of regional and national competitions provides a forum for teams to present the results of their projects, and to be evaluated by business leaders serving as judges. Competitions are held at regional, national and international levels. Enactus Southampton are current UK national champions and have succeeded in winning the National Cup five times and the World Cup in Johannesburg in 2015.

We believe investing in students that take entrepreneurial action for others creates a better world for us all.
